The next Chevrolet Feather Awards Dialogue is set to highlight LGBTI issues in the Northern Cape on Saturday 28 May.
This year, the annual awards ceremony is marking its eighth anniversary by travelling to eight provinces to engage with communities about LGBTI issues and challenges.
Last month, around 150 activists and community members gathered in Limpopo to speak out against the scourge of LGBTI hate crimes in that province.
The next and second Dialogue will take place in Kuruman. In 2012, the town was rocked by the horrific murder of twenty-four-year-old Thapelo Makhutle, a young gay/trans individual. Not only was his throat slit but his genitals were cut off and forced into his mouth.
Saturday’s Dialogue will focus on sensitising the community about LGBTI identities, address issues of stigma and discrimination, and engage the broader community on the challenges faced by LGBTI people in the region.
The event will have panellists from groups such as Access Chapter 2, Khula Youth Network in Hamanskraal and Bongani Sibeko, an LGBTI representative on the Gauteng Aids Council and a recently appointed board member of Trans Wellness Project.
Organisers have also invited two community activists from the area; one identifies as a transwoman and the other as a lesbian woman.
“We are quite excited at this as we are seeing ourselves go into remote areas and engaging in pertinent community issues,” commented Motlatsi Motseoile from the Feather Awards.
The Kuruman Dialogue will be held at the Thabo Moorosi Multipurpose Centre (Mothibi Road, Mothibistad, 8474) on Saturday 28 May from 9.30am. All from the LGBTI community are welcome to attend and participate.
