The Gay & Lesbian Network will be hosting their annual Pink Mynah Festival from 3 to 5 December in Pietermaritzburg and everyone is welcome to join the festivities.
The festival is aimed at celebrating diversity within communities, bringing people together and creating awareness.
The event will kick off with an Arts & Film Festival which will be held at the KZN Museum on the 3rd of December. The highlight will be the network’s very own Rainbow Theatre Group, who performed an amazing piece at this year’s Jomba Contemporary Dance Festival, hosted by UKZN.
There will be also be an art exhibition which will look at the life of members of the LGBTI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex) community in South Africa.
The second day, the 4th of December, will see the Pink Mynah Pageant at the Imperial Protea Hotel. There are two categories, Mr Pink Mynah and Ms Pink Mynah, and entrants were able to enter in either category, regardless of gender or sexual orientation – one of the factors that make the pageant unique.
General entry is R50 for the pageant and a fashion show, while VIP tickets at R300 also get you a three-course meal.
On the 5th of December there will be a street parade, starting at the City Hall and marching to Alexandra Park, where there will be live music, stalls and great prizes up for grabs.
For all the party animals, there will be an after party at Sticky Fingers (9 Manchester Road, Northdale) that night. Pre-sale tickets are available for R70 at the Network’s office. This includes entrance to the after party, transport to the after party, entry to the lucky draw and a pink shooter on arrival. Alternatively, you can buy your ticket on the night at Sticky Fingers for R80.
The network is also running a competition to be entered into its 2016 Rainbow Calendar, which is again open to everyone in a celebration of diversity.
If you are interested in the calendar, having a stall, sponsoring the event or just having an awesome time for a good cause, please visit the Network’s website or visit them at their office (187a Burger Street, Pietermaritzburg). You can also call Mandy Killian on 033 342 6165 or email media@gaylesbian.org.za.
The Pink Mynah festival is endorsed by the Msunduzi Pietermaritzburg Tourism Association and the KZN Gay & Lesbian Tourism Association.
