90-SOMETHING LESBIAN COUPLE SAY ‘I DO’

10 September 2014

Two American lesbian women in their nineties have shown that it’s never too late to make your love official.

On Saturday, Vivian Boyack, 91, and Alice “Nonie” Dubes, 90, got married in Davenport, Iowa after an astonishing 72-year-long relationship.

“This is a celebration of something that should have happened a very long time ago,” said the Rev. Linda Hunsaker during the ceremony, which was attended by friends and family.

The two women, both wearing peach, held hands as they exchanged vows while seated in wheelchairs.

“We’ve had a good time,” Dubes told the Quad-City Times about their relationship. The couple have travelled to every American state, all of Canada’s provinces and to England twice during their time together.

Friend of 55 years, Jerry Yeast, 73, told the newspaper: “I’ve known these two women all my life, and I can tell you, they are special. This is a very special day for all of us.”

Same-sex marriage was legalised in Iowa in 2009, making it the fourth US state to do so. Today, gays and lesbians can legally marry in nineteen states and the District of Columbia, while 31 states have a law or constitutional amendment restricting marriage to the union of one man and one woman.
