SOMIZI TO HOMOPHOBES: YOUR HATE WON’T MAKE ME STRAIGHT!

Idols South Africa judge Somizi Mhlongo has lashed out at homophobic South Africans following the murder of young lesbian Noluvo Swelindawo on the weekend.

He also slammed the Department of Justice for not taking action against those who’ve perpetrated hate crimes against the LGBTI community.

In a passionate Instagram video post, the choreographer said: “I choose not to keep quiet. I choose not to keep silent when I see in the news or I hear of corrective rape taking place somewhere in South Africa, when I hear of a young girl that has been murdered because she is lesbian. She didn’t choose to be lesbian – she is lesbian!

“So all I’m trying to say is that South Africa, homophobes, get it into your skull: being gay, its just as being black or white. You don’t choose. You are that.

“And the justice system. You are failing us. You are the reason why they think they can get away with murder. And all you homophobes, I’m telling you again: Your hate won’t make me straight!” said an angry Mhlongo.

On Wednesday, 24-year-old Signice Mdani appeared in the Blue Downs Regional Court in Cape Town. He has been charged with house breaking, intent to assault, kidnapping and the murder of 22-year-old Swelindawo, also known as Vovo.

It’s alleged that he was one of a group of men who broke into the young woman’s home in Driftsands near Khayelitsha at night, abducted her and later shot her. Her body was found the next day dumped alongside the N2 highway.
